6 TRADITIONS SPRING FLING is the annual spring kick-off celebration at LSC-Tomball, uniting students, faculty, and staff in a day of festive fun and entertainment. Organized by the Office of Student Experience and student organizations, the event features an array of engaging activities, complemented by offerings of free food, entertainment, rides, and various other activities. Attendees can also seize the opportunity to win exciting prizes throughout the event, making Spring Fling an eagerly anticipated and enjoyable gathering for students and faculty alike. ENGAGE is a dynamic three-week program designed to immerse students in campus life and foster connections with their peers, faculty, and staff. The first week, known as Premiere Week, kicks off before classes, providing an exciting opportunity for students to engage in activities. Howl Week follows in the first week of classes, encouraging students to connect beyond the confines of the classroom. Involvement Week, hosted during the second week of classes, concludes ENGAGE by providing students with opportunities to join student organizations, explore the Involvement Fair, and try out for sports teams, promoting a sense of community and involvement in campus life. ENGAGE is a comprehensive initiative that fosters lasting connections and enriches the overall college experience. CLUB CUP is a thrilling event that brings together the student clubs on campus for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. This exciting event allows members from different clubs to showcase their skills, creativity, and teamwork as they go head-tohead in various fun and engaging challenges. Club Cup aims to foster a sense of community and connection among students, providing a platform for them to build lasting friendships beyond their individual club affiliations. This is a day filled with laughter, collaboration, and the spirit of unity as LSC-Tomball clubs come together to celebrate diversity and shared experiences in the spirit of friendly competition.
7 THE STUDENT EXCELLENCE AWARDS is a ceremony at Lone Star College-Tomball is an annual celebration held each spring, dedicated to honoring the outstanding achievements of the college’s best and brightest! Recognizing excellence in various domains, this event highlights the diverse talents and contributions of exceptional individuals within the campus community. Nominations and awards are bestowed by dedicated faculty and staff, creating a prestigious platform to showcase and applaud the remarkable accomplishments of Lone Star College-Tomball’s student leaders. HOWL FEST is a beloved fall semester tradition, taking place every October on the Southwest Lawn. This annual event offers students an exciting blend of free food, engaging games, enticing prizes, and energetic dances. CLUBSGIVING is a festive celebration hosted by the Office of Student Experience, extending warm Thanksgiving wishes to all student clubs and organizations on campus. This annual gathering brings together students, faculty, and staff for an early Thanksgiving potluck, creating a space for club members and advisors to indulge in delicious food, foster connections, and engage with the diverse array of clubs and organizations on campus. It’s a delightful opportunity to share gratitude and camaraderie before the Thanksgiving break. THE INVOLVEMENT FAIR is hosted by LSC-Tomball’s Office of Student Experience is a spirited event that provides students with a unique chance to engage with various on-campus organizations. Occurring once a semester, this gathering in the commons brings together student organizations eager to recruit new members. Attendees can enjoy free food, exciting prizes, lively music, games, and more, making the Involvement Fair a lively and enjoyable experience for all students looking to connect and get involved on campus. 7
8 MEET THE MASCOT Meet Trevor the Timberwolf, our charismatic and spirited mascot. As a Timberwolf, Trevor symbolizes strength, resilience, and a shared sense of identity among the students. His presence serves as a powerful unifying force, fostering a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie within the Lone Star College-Tomball family. Trevor’s journey began with a clear mission—to inspire school spirit and create a bond among the students. Shannon Marino, Director of Student Experience, recognized the need for a uniting factor, and thus, Trevor was brought to life in 2007 as the living embodiment of LSC-Tomball’s vibrant and diverse community. Beyond his general campus engagement, Trevor is a familiar face at LSC-Tomball sports games, events, and community gatherings. His enthusiastic presence adds an extra layer of excitement to these occasions, further strengthening the bonds within the college and creating lasting memories for everyone involved. 9 MEET TATER TOT Meet Tater Tot, Lone Star College-Tomball’s Furry Comfort Ambassador! Embarking on a journey to foster emotional well-being and create a paw-sitive environment, the Lone Star College Police Department proudly presents Tater Tot, the campus’s first dedicated comfort dog. This adorable mini Labradoodle, affectionately named after his handler Officer Emily Tait and his charming resemblance to a crispy fried potato, is here to spread joy across the college community. Officer Emily Tait, Tater Tot’s devoted handler, envisioned a program that goes beyond traditional policing and promotes mental health, crisis intervention, and victim assistance. The result? A dynamic duo ready to lend a furry paw when it’s needed most. Tater Tot’s mission is clear: to provide comfort and emotional support to students and staff alike. Though he is not your typical K-9 in the police department, Tater Tot is a devoted companion dedicated to spreading warmth and cheer. Having completed his training, Tater Tot made his debut on campus in January and is now set to embark on a campushopping adventure across the entire Lone Star College system. 12 IMPORTANT TERMS Terms Description Associate Degree An award that normally requires at least 2 years but less than 4 years of full-time equivalent college work in a grouping of courses designed to lead the individual directly to employment in a specific career or to transfer to an upper-level baccalaureate program. This specifically refers to the associate of arts, associate of science, associate of applied arts, associate of applied science, associate of arts in teaching, and associate of occupational studies degrees. The term “applied” in an associates degree name indicates a program in which the content is primarily technical. Certificate Program A technical program designed for entry-level employment or for upgrading skills and knowledge within an occupation Clinical Clinical experiences provide workplace settings in which students learn and apply program theory and management of the workflow. Clinical experiences must take place in a health care setting and students must not be paid for learning experiences Cohort A group of persons who share one or more particular statistical or demographic characteristics, such as having received their associates degree in a certain year or range of years College Work Study Student The College Work-Study Program provides jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the course of study. Employment opportunities for Lone Star College students exist at each campus. Work study can be awarded to students with need who work on campus and who are paid according to the hours worked. Awards vary based on amount of need. Contact Hour/ Credit Hour A unit of measurement that represents an hour of scheduled instruction given to students of which 50 minutes must be of direct instruction Core Curriculum The common part of every undergraduate curriculum that introduces students to a broad range of knowledge areas beyond their major and helps students develop basic intellectual competencies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and computer literacy. In Texas, the core curriculum usually consists of 42-48 semester credit hours of course work distributed among the disciplines of communication, mathematics, then natural sciences, the arts and humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. State law mandates the transfer of core curriculum courses between all public institutions of high education Developmental Education Developmental education is defined as courses, tutorials, laboratories, or other efforts to bring student’ skill levels in reading, writing, and mathematics to entering college level. English or Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and study skills or thinking skills courses are considered developmental education courses in the ACGM manual and fall under developmental education funding limits established by the Texas Legislature Full-time student An undergraduate enrolled in 12 or more credit hours First Generation College Students A student who is the first member of their immediate family to attend a college or university; neither of their biological or adoptive parents have earned a baccalaureate degree Official Day 12th class day for the Spring and Fall semesters. Last day to drop a class without adding to the six drop limit. Part-time student A student who is enrolled for less than 12 semester credit hours in the fall or spring semester Term Fall, Spring, or Summer. Fall: August to December, Spring: January to May, Summer: June to August. There may be mini-mesters that overlap terms. These mini-mesters will be reported in the term in which they start but will have different session codes. This provides new students with opportunities to connect regularly with an experienced Timberwolf at LSC-Tomball. 25 The Student Government Association of LSC-Tomball serves as the umbrella organization representing the interests of all registered studens on campus and acts as the liaison between the student body and campus leadership. 27 PHI THETA KAPPA (PTK) PTK offers a vast array of benefits to its members, connecting them with a global network of over 3.5 million individuals. These benefits include access to scholarships, career training programs, leadership development, and more. The local chapter at LSCTomball, Alpha Rho Mu, is an active part of the campus community. We regularly hold chapter meetings, sponsor events on campus, perform community service, and travel to leadership development events. Membership into the Alpha Rho Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa requires: • Earning a 3.5 cumulative GPA based on 12 college-level (transferable) credit hours completed in the Lone Star College System (dual credit classes do count toward membership); • Being enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours during the semester the student is inducted (Fall or Spring); • Having established academic excellence as judged by the faculty; and • Being of good moral character and possessing recognized qualities of citizenship. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES The International Studies Area of Concentration (AOC) is an introduction for students to global studies with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of peoples and nations. 40 LSC-Tomball Fitness Center fosters an inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, alums, and community members to connect, play, and pursue holistic wellbeing through outdoor fitness and wellness programs and activities, club sports, and special events. We continue to grow to meet the expanding needs of our members. Student, faculty, and staff memberships are free. Students must be enrolled in class(es) to access the LSC-Tomball Fitness Center. Students, faculty, and staff must provide a student/employee ID at the check-in desk. Community members are invited to utilize the Fitness Center for a nominal fee and must provide their membership card at the checkin desk. 41 CARDIO & WEIGHT TRAINING The cardio training room contains 22 stateof-the-art cardio training machines, three 30” flat-screen TVs, a core training area, and a supplemental weight training area. The weight room is fully equipped with a variety of equipment to suit all levels of exercise and goals, from the weight machines to the loaded leg press. RACQUETBALL COURT & INDOOR TRACK The Tomball Fitness Center has an indoor track measuring approximately 1/10 of a mile per lap containing windows on all sides. This area provides a comfortable space to exercise while feeling as though one is outdoors. The Fitness Center also offers four racquetball courts with equipment available for checkout for participation at no cost! DANCE STUDIO, ROCK WALL & RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES LSC-Tomball has a one of a kind indoor rockclimbing wall that is open 11am -3 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We also have a dance studio which can be used for other various wellness activities. We also offer activities such as cornhole, wallyball, 3-on-3 basketball, and outdoor volleyball tournaments. OUTDOOR BASKETBALL & VOLLEYBALL COURT The LSC-Tomball Fitness Center also features an outdoor basketball court for students, employees, and the community. 44 COURSE VARIETY In today’s educational landscape, flexibility is key. Lone Star College offers various class modes to suit different preferences and schedules. Whether you prefer the convenience of online learning, the interaction of face-to-face classes, or a blend of both, we have options to accommodate your needs. Lone Star College now has a variety of options for classes with expanded offerings of face-to-face classes while continuing to provide hybrid and online courses to meet student needs. LSC students will have three class options: in-person classes that take place entirely on campus; hybrid classes which are a combination of online and faceto-face learning; and online classes which provide a flexible and convenient choice for busy schedules and freedom to self-direct. Students will have deadlines and may have requirements for online interactions during scheduled meetings. Students will engage in their class through myLoneStar, which will require students to have access to a computer and internet. Physical attendance at a Lone Star location is not required for an online course. ONLINE LIVE – SCHEDULED, ONLINE CLASS MEETINGS REQUIRED (OS) Online classes do not require students and faculty to be in the same room at any time during the course. It includes gift aid and self-help programs. FEDERAL GRANT PROGRAMS Federal education grants are funds distributed by the United States government to students who need assistance paying for college. 49 FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCESS LoneStar.edu/Financial-Aid-Steps Step 1: Complete a FAFSA Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through the U.S. Department of Education. Include the LSC school code (011145) on your FAFSA so that your information is sent to the college. Step 2: Provide Additional Documentation Approximately 30% of financial aid applications are selected for verification. This means that the Department of Education requires that you submit additional information to complete the financial aid awarding process. For more information: LoneStar.eclu/FA-Verify. Students who are selected for verification will be notified of any requirements via their LSC campus e-mail address. Step 3: Financial Aid Awarding Students must complete an admissions application before receiving a financial aid award (LoneStar.edu/Admissions-Application). It takes approximately three weeks or more to process financial aid applications. Students can view their Financial Aid package in MyLoneStar (My.LoneStar.edu). Students must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Loan Entrance Counseling to receive loans (StudentLoans.gov).
